Email hyperlinks via Our Graduates web page

Assignment of an alias email address:

The Our Graduates web page lists all graduates of the Class of 1965. When a graduate's email address is provided (via Guestbook entry and/or CHS Graduate? link, a hyperlink is established between the graduate's name and an alias email address. The following is the format of the alias email address: chs1965_(graduate's initials)@chs1965.org. For example, Linda Dianne Ledford's alias is chs1965_ldl@chs1965.org.

Why an alias:

The primary reason for using an alias is to protect the actual email address of our classmates that would be hesitant to have their email address displayed to the internet public; yet desire the ability of classmates to email them. Some graduates provided their email directly without leaving an entry in the Guestbook. This is understandable and to provide support to include all graduates this approach was selected for the Our Graduates web page. This concept also eliminates a need for us to password protect our website thus allowing more freedom of visits and ease of use. For our graduates that may not be aware and are hesitant to provide their email address please pass along this concept.

How does the alias work:

Our web server provides forwarding capabilities by looking up the actual email address associated with the alias and routing the email to the correct graduate.

How does the graduate know if email was sent via an alias:

When you receive email that was sent via your alias the To: heading will be addressed as chs1965_(your initials)@chs1965.org. This means your name on the Our Graduates page was clicked on or chs1965_(your initials)@chs1965.org was keyed on the To: block for an internet provider or web based email client. When mail is sent with the alias address the sender at this time does not know your actual email address. Only if and when you reply will the sender know your actual email address. NOTE: If any classmate receives junk, spam, or explicit email addressed to their alias please forward that email to red_devils@chs1965.org. Another function of an alias is that it can be changed if we find abusive use of our email aliases.

Why are we using an alias on the Our Graduates web page if I provide my actual email address in the Guestbook:

This provides uniformity and eliminates the need to keep track of the graduate's desire to provide an actual email address and those who desire not to have their email address directly displayed.

How does one request insertion on the Our Graduates page without leaving a Guestbook entry:

There is a hyperlink on the main page labeled '65 Graduate? Email Link? Click here. By clicking on here you will be prompted to enter your graduation name, graduation year and email address. This information is used (for our graduates) to set up the alias on the Our Graduates web page. For all other alumni their actual email address is always associated with their graduation name. Additionally, if your email address changes, this input can be utilized for change to our web site.

Can I change or remove my actual email address on the Guestbook:

Yes. Just email red_devils@chs1965.org with any comment/change that you desire. As with public phone numbers and directory listings most may desire a public listing but we wanted to create an option for all.
